What Is the Difference Between Immediate Implants and Traditional Dental Implants?
The biggest difference between immediate implants and traditional dental implants is time. When you receive traditional implants, there is a period of time (usually a few weeks to months) where your mouth is left to heal before implantation.
Immediate implants, however, do not require the same healing time. Once it is determined you have a need for an immediate dental implant, the process only takes about an hour. The affected tooth is removed, and the implant can be placed in approximately 20-30 minutes. There is a possibility you may need a soft tissue graft to support the implant, but after the implant is placed, you receive a new, temporary crown, and you are sent home for a few weeks to heal and allow the bone to fuse to the implant, a process called osseointegration.
Benefits of an Immediate Dental Implant
Immediate Treatment
Some situations cannot afford a lengthy healing process. Same-day implants allow for treatment of time-sensitive conditions. For example, when the front teeth are lost, it is imperative to preserve the contour of the gums. Immediate implants allow for this by never giving the gums time to change shape.
Minimally Invasive
Immediate implants are quick and easy, so your implant dentist doesn’t need to do extensive dental work to provide you with a solid, healthy smile.
Bone & Soft Tissue Preservation
Without the root of your natural tooth, your jaw and gums can begin to deteriorate due to lack of stimulation. With same-day implants, no time is lost in replacing the root of the tooth with the fixture and screw of a dental implant.
Less Healing Time
After a tooth is extracted, the gums and bone are allowed to heal for 3-5 months before a traditional implant is placed. And then there is the healing time after placement, totalling 6-12 months of healing time. Same-day implants cut out that time in between, leaving the healing process to take only about 3-4 months to completely heal before the permanent crown is placed.

Are You a Candidate for Immediate Dental Implants?
Health Factors
Overall Health: In order to make sure you can effectively fight off potential infection, we want you in the best possible health.
Bone Density: If your implants have any hope of successful osseointegration, your jawbone must be strong enough to hold them.
Gum Health and Stability: Like the other factors above, your gums need to be in the best of health to support proper healing and fight off potential infection.
Lifestyle and Situational Factors
Smoking Status: Smoking isn’t good for your oral health no matter the situation, but it can also disqualify you from being able to receive dental implants. Smoking significantly weakens your jawbone and gums, and if you are currently a smoker, your chances of implant success can be seriously compromised.
Front Teeth vs Molars: Your front teeth will likely benefit more from an immediate implant. It is important to support the contour of your gums right away. However, your molars may improve better with the traditional implant process.
Frequently Asked Questions
While the success rate of immediate implants is still high, there is a slightly larger risk of implant failure when compared to traditional implants.
The implant process itself usually takes 20-30 minutes. In conjunction with tooth extraction, it may take an hour or more. The timing will vary based on the complexity of your case.
