While vitally important, the services available at Alpine Family Dental are about more than reclaiming and sustaining an attractive smile. Our team in Kalispell, Montana, is led by Dr. Evan Olson. Dr. Olson has acquired substantial and distinctive advanced training in highly specialized areas of dentistry, including dental sleep medicine. As such, he supports patients’ overall health and well-being with solutions like oral appliance therapy (night guards) for bruxism.
What is bruxism?
Defined as “semi-voluntary” or “involuntary” gnashing, grinding, and clenching of the teeth and jaws, bruxism is associated with anxiety and stress and affects a reported 10% of the adult population. Women tend to have this condition more than men, and it is also associated with the temporomandibular (TMJ) joints or jaw joints. Bruxism arises as the opposing upper and lower teeth come into contact with each other and when bracing or thrusting the lower jaw. It may be a primary condition or secondary to other illnesses and even to the medications taken to manage those conditions. Stimulants like coffee and soda, as well as teeth and jaw misalignment, can also affect the progression of bruxism.
How do I know if I have bruxism?
Good question! Dental professionals like our team are often on the front lines of diagnosing this condition. Because patients tend to grind their teeth while sleeping, they may not be aware that they have this problem! We may suspect bruxism is to blame if, during an exam, the following signs are noticed or mentioned by the patient:
- Tight jaw muscles
- Sore muscles
- Facial and jaw pain
- TMJ symptoms (chronic headaches, jaw stiffness)
- Distinctive wear patterns to the teeth
- Flat, worn-down teeth
- Thin enamel
- Chips and fractures
- Gum recession
- Loose teeth
